Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Management of 6-8 equine care tech staff members including: • Staff Scheduling • Time off records keeping • Onboarding and training of new hires Management of individualized daily care for all 40 +/- equines (horses, minis, donkeys, mules): • Manage feed, medications, and supplements for each equine taking into consideration any special needs or health conditions • Daily therapeutic and/or medical care oversight • Oversight and assistance with routine and emergency care • Coordination with external vendors such as chiropractors & body workers • Scheduling of Veterinary care • Purchasing feed, hay, supplies, and medications / managing inventory • Prepare medication schedules (instructions) for short term medical needs • Order and coordination for repair and maintenance of equine therapeutic devices • Night Check 2 nights per week • Occasional nighttime and after-hours medical management and emergency response. Assisting with horse rescue: • Driving truck and trailer. • Safely catching and loading equine. • Assisting with coordination of supplies needed. Equine records keeping: • Maintain relevant daily notes in barn management software • Upload vet, chiropractic, bodywork reports • Maintain feed schedule • Prepare medication schedules for short-term medical needs
Requirements
• Management of staff and/or volunteers/interns • Knowledge of proper grooming processes, different skin or hair conditions and general treatment options • Understanding of equine nutritional principles and common use medications/interactions • General rehab knowledge. Familiarity with rehab/therapy tools and principles. Willingness and desire to take vet/trainer direction and/or input on an individual case by case basis • Familiarity with Natural Horsemanship methodologies and herd dynamics. Ability to handle a large variety of equine types in both quiet and stressful situations • Emergency response and recognition – colic, choke, common wounds, lameness, ulcers, high-risk locations, etc., ability to triage and direct others. Wrapping proficiency, willingness to communicate with and take direction from vet and instruct others on proper care • Ability to manage and calculate inventory needs for grain, hay, supplements and medications and other necessities • General records keeping knowledge and some level of computer system proficiency with basic knowledge of Microsoft excel, outlook, word and/or similar Skills Required: • Personnel management • Horse, Donkey and Mule handling of all sizes and temperaments • Identification of common hoof disorders (thrush, white Line, abscess) • Proficient with hoof testers and hoof treatments (soaking, poultice wraps, topicals) • Wound management • Proper grooming – proficient with grooming tools. • Inter muscular injections • Medicating with oral syringe • General computer skills including basic use of Microsoft Excel/Word, email, attach documents to email, upload/download. • Good communication skills • Critical thinking skills • Interpersonal skills • Reading, writing, speaking English • Must be physically capable of picking up 50 pounds, bending, squatting and twisting. • Legal to work in US
