20 + years riding 10+ Years Instructing Experience in: Hunters, Jumpers, Hunting, Dressage, Driving, Young stock
Training: I have a strong understanding of the horses basic nature and how they learn, and have no desire to work for a barn that uses overly aggressive training techniques that result in fearful tense horses. All my training/interactions with horses, both on the ground and in the saddle, work to achieve a confident, willing and happy horse
Instructing: I started instructing at a young age and was able to understand and communicate w/beginner riders. Many instructors lack the patience to bring along beg. riders. I enjoy to and believe helping them understand WHY they should or shouldn't do something is hugely important. I focus on using exercises to help riders develop good balance, equitation and FEEL so they have the basis to safely and confidently move on to more adv.riding.
I never blame or put down students. If a student is failing at something I believe its more a reflection of their instructor than themselves. After all its our job as instructors to develop their riding skills and not over challenge them. Patience, structure and a positive attitude help create happy, driven and safe horsemen. My goal is to develop a balanced confident rider, with strong leg position and SOFT hands. I am a big believer in form to function.
With more advanced rider's I like to ask LOTS of questions. How did they feel about a distance, was it to tight or too long? Why? Was the horse straight? Leaning on the hand or not moving off the leg? How did they feel their position was and how did that influence the horse? My goal is to develop thinking confident rider's that are capable of making correct decisions without an instructor standing there telling them what do do.
Competed in 4H, Open shows, IHSA, USEF AA Hunters and fox hunted
