Equine Work Experience
I have taken lessons most of my life. I took a western riding class while I was a student at UMaine where I learned about different aspects of western riding such as roping and round penning and worked on my riding skills. I also worked with retired Standardbred race horses for three years during my internship at UMaine when I was a student there. Through my internship, I helped retrain the Standardbreds to be able to be ridden nicely and I helped take care of them. I learned about grooming, tacking/untacking, leading a horse, riding skills, lunging, teasing and collecting from a stallion, cleaning tack, bathing horses, mucking stalls, feeding, and more. Currently, I am working as an assistant barn manager/vet assistant at Whimsy Brook Farm where I have learned how to clip, de-worm, keep medical records, trim whiskers, fix bridal paths, manage dentist and farrier schedules, administer homeopathic remedies and other medical treatments, supervise and train new staff, and free lunging.
Type of Ride Work
I know how to walk and trot/jog. I am working on perfecting my canter. I know my two - point, but am working on jumping. I usually ride hunt seat, but have ridden Western and Dressage as well.
I have competed in two W/T Equitation classes, one W/T Pleasure class, one W/T Command class, one Ground Poles class, and one Carrot Race. I received third in both of my Equitation classes, fifth in my Pleasure class, fifth in my Command class, third in the Ground Poles class, and first in the Carrot race.
