Duties of Current Occupation

Virginia Tech Barn Staff & Herd Health Intern - Wound/Injury management, doing treatments, making treatment sheets, handling for vet/farrier, feeding, making feed, cleaning stalls, lead feed shifts, turn out/bring in horses, and order feed/medicine.

Equine Work Experience

I started riding horses at age 4 or 5 and rode off and on until 2022. I started riding consistently and teaching kids lessons, and I do still with Debbie Mooty and the Virginia Blue Ridge Riders. I also volunteered at Healing Strides during 2021. I volunteered with the Virginia Tech equine barn during my first semester of freshman year ( Fall 2023), and earned a position as paid barn staff the following semester. I still hold that position. I joined Virginia Tech's chapter of the Collegiate Horsemen's Association, and became involved with training young horses and foaling season. This year, I added the herd health internship, which means I help manage the horses at the Virginia Tech Barn, and I will be continuing this in the Spring. I also had the honor of taking the Training and Marketing course here at VT, and was able to train a weanling and sell her in the Hokie Harvest Sale.

Specialities

Worked with/ trained foals and youngstock. Led teams before.

Type of Ride Work

I started by learning the basics and how to trail ride. Then, I went to an English barn and did flatwork and began over fences. Finally, I ended up with my current trainer and found a love for western dressage. I still do small jumps on occasion, and I like to ride English some too. I show in western dressage, but I have shown as a hunter rider before.

Competition Details

I have competed, and I help groom our horses for shows. I do come from a smaller barn.
