Some classes I have taken include Horse Science, Animal Science, and Animal Systems, all through The Ohio State University.

Equine Work Experience

As first generation rider and “city girl,” I have struggled with finding opportunities to be around horses at times other than lessoning or showing. I’ve found it challenging to learn how to care for my own horse as most of the duties fall to the barn manager/trainer. I just finished my first year at The Ohio State University, studying Animal Science with a specialization in horses. To be honest I didn’t feel like I learned all that much despite my excellent grades and perfect attendance. I have decided to take a leap and not go back to school, but find a position as a working student where I can get hands-on experience instead of staring at a slideshow lecture. Recently I have been trying to get involved and form industry connections. I am currently employed at Schneiders Saddlery where I am able to share knowledge and ideas with like-minded people and learn about different equine products.

Specialities

Over the past few years I have focused my riding to show jumping, but before that I did the hunters. Though I am still considered amateur, I am careful to follow instructions and keep an open mind to criticism. Trainers often describe me as a fast learner. I don’t scare easily and will jump anything you put in front of me. When out of the saddle, I am always eager and willing to lend a hand mucking out a a stall or putting on standing wraps.

Type of Ride Work

I have been taking lessons for over a decade now, since I was 7. Over the years, I have ridden a wide range of horses. I have experience working with young and green horses, particularly thoroughbreds and warmbloods. I spent a couple years at a predominantly western barn where I got to learn basic horse training and natural horsemanship. Though I love never started a horse myself, I have been around others who have and was included into some of the process.

Competition Details

I have experience competing in both the hunters and jumpers, and am familiar with the different types of classes and what they ask. I currently show my own horse at the 1.20m level. Though I have never worked at a show, I am familiar with the duties and expectations and could probably step in as a groom if needed.
