Qualifications
I feel that my 17 years of horse experience as outlined qualify me to be a great working student. However, I still have a lot to learn. I am a hard worker with good enthusiasm and a passion for all things horse related.
Duties of Current Occupation
Document sea turtle nesting activity and identify each crawl to species type, locate egg chamber, and mark nests. I also conduct nest excavations, enter data into a GPS unit, paper data sheets and office database. Involves long hours in the hot sun.
Equine Work Experience
I have been riding horses since the age of 7. I began training with Karen Szadyr, who specializes in Dressage, and started jumping at age 8. I leased a horse from ages 10-11, and competed with that horse in my first recognized dressage show with MDA in Michigan at the age of 11. I then moved to Ohio at the age of 12, where I began working with Eventing instructor Julie McElhaney. I purchased my own horse at the age of 14, a 4 year old thoroughbred gelding. I trained and rode him for 6 years, and sold him December 16, 2015. Since then, I rode in IHSA at my college, and took weekly hunter/jumper lessons. My heart lies with eventing, however. I have also interned at an equine veterinarian and am familiar with basic equine first aid. I volunteered at a therepeutic riding center for 5 years and have experience leading all kinds of horses. In the summer of 2016, I worked with OTTB at the Florida TRAC to train and prepare them for new homes.
Specialities
Eventing, have competed through training level. Dressage, competed through first level. IHSA, competed in the novice and intermediate divisions.
Type of Ride Work
Expertise in both eventing and dressage; general knowledge in hunter/jumper. I know how to change and alter the gait at the walk, trot, canter, and gallop. I can train horses to leg yield, shoulder-in, haunches-in, turn on the haunches, turn on the forehand, and half pass. I know how to set up various jumping exercises and count strides.
Competition Details
I competed dressage until the age of 13, and then began competing at recognized events with a variety of horses. I then competed my own horse through training level eventing (3'6"-3'9"), at both recognized and unrecognized events, and have jumped up to 4 feet. In college, I rode IHSA and jumped the intermediate (2'6" height) division.
