Equine Work Experience
The Institute is internationally recognized for their work in animal-assisted therapy, nature-based programming, humane education, and green care. As a full-time intern in the Equine Education and Interaction program, I learned the many facets of human-animal interactions and how these interactions can provide a therapeutic milieu to children (grades K-12) in a special education school and residential treatment center. I assisted with riding classes, taught middle school and high school students about equine care, supervised students on how to conduct barn chores, and tended to all needs of the equines such as grooming, feeding, and cleaning their living quarters. This internship included extensive training in areas as diverse as therapeutic crisis intervention, how nonprofit organizations operate, horsemanship, animal care and how to manage a horse barn with 21 equines (horses, donkeys and ponies)
