I am a keen aspiring groom who has been working with horses on a voluntary basis, and am now looking for a full or part-time opportunity to progress my career and gain more experience. I am confident around horses and have been developing essential skills through volunteering at a livery yard and with a rescue. Ideally, I would be looking for a role in the Basingstoke area while I'm learning to drive, but happy to consider a live-in position in the wider Hampshire region or further afield.
I've worked with the ponies at Turtle Back Zoo since November 2018.
Farm Aid: Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures, feeding and administering oral medication and supplements, monitoring behavior and health, grooming, leading ponies with a rider, lifting and carrying heavy objects, finding work to do when bored.
Riding when I was very young, grooming, leading, transferring between fields, tacking and untacking quickly, feeding and administering oral medication/supplements, controlling a bolting ponie, controlling a rearing ponie, dealing with an apaloosa who bites when he's tired, leading a very stubborn donkey.
Learning quickly. I seem to be good at connecting with animals, and I enjoy their company. I'm physically strong and enjoy hard work. I like people and figuring out how to work with them most effectively. I prefer to stay busy and you can find me at the zoo on a slow day, either walking the ponies for exercise or fixing rakes, gates, and feeders, and wheelbarrows.
Leading ponies with child riders around a small track in oval or figure 8 pattern. Instructing children on safe riding habits, and monitoring throughout ride. Monitoring old, sometimes abused, sometimes sick ponies for signs of bolting, rearing, kicking, or other undesired behaviors.
