Due to a change in circumstances I'm currently looking for a part time riding role, 4 mornings a week, but can be flexible. I have over 16 years experience within the industry and have produced horses from youngstock up to intermediate. I'm happy to work with all sorts, from happy hackers to fit competition horses. From Showjumping, to showing/eventing and foals through to stallions I have experience in all aspects of the equestrian world. I am looking for my next long term journey where I can spend my days working with the animals I love, and carry out my exceptionally high standards for the right person.
Working as a barn manager taught me much about what it takes to be a horse owner and caretaker. I grew up learning to ride, and still enjoy that very much, but never had to make all the day-to-day decisions on horse care until I moved into a horse management position. I learned caring for other people's horses is a vastly different task than caring for my own. I enjoy working with horses because though each day has its routine, each is also different with new learning opportunities.
General horse care; Basic first aid; Record keeping; Ordering feed, hay, shavings, etc; Corresponding with vet/farrier as needed; Trailering; Basic barn maintenance; Keeping correct feed/supplement/deworming regimen; Sole charge of up to 17 horses
Since July 2021 I have been a Pharmacy Technician in Mississippi, but would like to get back into the horse world in a management position. I began taking English riding lessons when I was 11 and continued until my trainer moved away about 12 years ago. My bachelor's degree is in Equine Science and Communication; I worked as the barn manager at a boarding barn for 8 years with a year spent apprenticing with my instructor. We did some showing at local H/J schooling shows. I most enjoy the "behind the scenes" barn work. Seeing happy, healthy horses in the pastures is a great joy to me. I have not had experience managing other employees, but we had a small team to coordinate at the previous barn where I worked and I believe the time spent in the pharmacy/retail industry has taught me more about customer service and how to interact with people in that sense. I moved to New Mexico in January of 2020, taking my horse and dog with me. I'm willing to relocate for the right position.
Sole charge up to 17 horses; Equine first aid, including late night vet hauls; Scheduling equine professionals (veterinarian, farrier, chiropractor, nutrition specialist, etc); Feeding, turn in/out, mucking stalls/pastures, cleaning water buckets, filling hay nets; Arena riding (poles, gymnastics, and courses), Low-level dressage; trail riding; schooling level show jumping; Wrapping (polo and standing wraps, icing legs);Grooming, lite experience with clipping; Lunging; Towing 2 &4-horse trailers
Since my move I have mostly done trail riding when I've gotten the chance, but my true love has been show jumping at the schooling level, though I have a basic knowledge of Dressage and believe they work together to make a good horse. I enjoy creating gymnastics and pole work exercises as a way to build muscle and collection, as well as keep things interesting for the horse without over jumping. I'd love to have more time to start back into that type of work with my horse.
The local Hunter/Jumper association has a show in town a few times a year. I would attend them with my personal horse or pony I had in training. I enjoy attending jumping or dressage clinics when opportunities arise. I never rode to show, but it was nice to have a goal to work toward and how we performed at each show would reveal what needed improvements for the next show.
