Duties of Current Occupation

Currently a full-time graduate student. Classes are remote, and my schedule is flexible. In the past I have been a trainer, instructor, and tour guide. I have managed herds up to 140 head.

Equine Work Experience

I began riding at age 5, with only english schooling available to me. As soon as I was old enough I began working around the barn to afford lessons and hack time. In 2016 I got my first official equine job at a thoroughbred rescue in Union Bridge, MD, where I schooled fresh OTTBs and cared for 40+ horses with just one other barnhand. In 2017 I spent my first season wrangling in Yellowstone National Park. This was my first exposure to driving and western riding, and I worked hard to become confident and competent quickly. I took out rides with guests of all ages and skill levels, and helped manage a herd of 140 draft and saddle horses. Next winter I was the head driver of a small carriage company in Leavenworth, WA, where I was the sole charge of 8 draft horses. In 2019 I was selected as an Auxiliary Officer for the NYC Parks Mounted Unit. Last autumn I managed to buy my wrangle pony from Yellowstone. I assist in maintaining the herd at the barn where I keep him in exchange for board.

Specialities

General daily care— feeding, grooming, blanketing, administering medication and supplements, watching for lameness, first aid Leatherwork— making, fixing, and cleaning tack Schooling— ground work, flat work, ground manners

Type of Ride Work

Until the age of 20 I rode exclusively english in arenas in my hometown on Long Island, where I apprenticed under my trainer to learn everything I could about horse care beyond riding. I finally learned the in's and out's of driving, trail riding, and western riding when I worked in Yellowstone. I also saw the different approach and methods with which they maintain stock out west (Wyoming/Montana). I since moved to Maryland, where I found a great community and further exposure to new ideas.

Competition Details

Polocrosse. Otherwise non-competitive riding.
