Duties of Current Occupation
Support staff: Feeding, grooming, tacking, mucking stalls, maintaining the barn Riding instructor: Previously PATH certified, previously coached for Special Olympics, worked with a variety of riders, assisted with horse training and exercise
Equine Work Experience
For about 15 years, I worked at a nonprofit riding center that was PATH certified. Many of the riders were disabled and most of the horses were donated and on their third or fourth job. I rode a wide variety of horses to help get them into shape and figure out what riders they would work with best. Most of the tack was English, though there were a few pieces of adaptive equipment to better support the riders. Several summers, I worked at different Girl Scout camps, mostly in the barn. I utilized my experience with evaluating horses, working with a wide variety of riders, and maintaining a barn and herd, while also taking the opportunity to learn from my coworkers.
Type of Ride Work
Most of my riding has been done on the flat. I have some experience with leading trail rides and jumping. One of my favorite parts of my former jobs has been to help get horses into better shape, whether it's by giving them a session with a good rider after working with so many beginners, helping to figure out what the cause of their behaviors might be, or just giving them good exercise. I'm also interested in learning more to become a better rider and horse person!
