Qualifications
No but I'm open to if needed for the job. Currently looking into relevant coursework available that isn't just experience I'm getting at the farm.
Duties of Current Occupation
Basic care of horses at a 30 horse boarding facility, not including feeding. Cleaning stalls. Deshedding and basic grooming. Ensuring the health and safety of each horse by checking for lameness or sores. Checking for any issues (fences broken etc)
Equine Work Experience
I am currently volunteering as a farm hand. I have about three months of experience at this barn, but I have been involved with horses either as a rider or volunteer on and off since I was about 12.
My first day at the farm, I was welcome to look around and do some deshedding. Instead I just asked what the owner was doing, and asked her to hand me a shovel and show me how she wants her stalls done. Now that it's summer, I fill in where needed, and keep an eye on whatever needs attending to. Right now I'm removing wasp nests, decobwebbing the barns and sheds, turning out as needed, cleaning stalls, filling hay bags, and keep an eye on the general health and happiness of the horses. I like to get to know the owners and how they care for their horse. That's honestly my favorite part of the job!
Specialities
Hard and reliable worker Always looking to improve how I do things Attentive to the health and behavior of the horse Good at developing relationships with the horse owners to provide the best care Very motivated to learn whatever needs to get done Willing to do the dirty stuff No fear response when dealing with difficult situations such as being cornered, or dealing with a spooked horse. Positive attitude, and genuinely kindhearted person
Type of Ride Work
I have not ridden in years, and have no interest. I'd rather be on the ground taking care of them. I am familiar with both English and Western tack, though.
