I am a keen aspiring groom who has been working with horses on a voluntary basis, and am now looking for a full or part-time opportunity to progress my career and gain more experience. I am confident around horses and have been developing essential skills through volunteering at a livery yard and with a rescue. Ideally, I would be looking for a role in the Basingstoke area while I'm learning to drive, but happy to consider a live-in position in the wider Hampshire region or further afield.
I have had two 20-year careers that overlapped - realtime captioner and yoga therapist. Both require working independently while coordinating with others, communicating well, staying calm and present, noticing details, showing up on time, working overtime when needed, organizing and prioritizing tasks, recognizing it's rarely personal and having a sense of humor! I have learned that everyone has something to teach me. I am ISO an opportunity where beginner's mind can fill me with horse wisdom.
Teaching adaptive yoga to older adults and those with complex medical conditions; teaching restorative yoga; creating trainings and workshops for students and yoga teachers worldwide; working with individuals and large groups.
Two years as volunteer at Therapeutic Riding Center in Chatsworth, CA: mucking stalls, grooming, tacking, turnout, sidewalking/leading. Covid shut down volunteering.
Two semesters in equine science at Pierce College in Canoga Park, CA: beginning & intermediate (using the term loosely) riding; beginning and intermediate training; and equine first aid (labs in progress due to covid)
Masterson Method intro and 5-day workshops - working on certification process. Online equine anatomy course for MM certification.
Liberty workshop at horse sanctuary in Missoula, MT. Parelli groundwork workshop in Simi Valley, CA.
More training/observing than experience with training horses, lunging, 7 games, etc. due to covid limiting opportunities. I spend a lot of time watching riding lessons, groundwork and trainers starting/rehabbing young and/or rescue horses.
Yoga research in collaboration with USC and UCLA; presenter at international conferences re research; creating/writing content for manuals/workshops; filming online content for 10 years - pre-covid ;) ; functional anatomy and biomechanics in humans; Stress/Relaxation Response in humans; communicating sophisticated ideas simply; problem solving and thinking on my feet (literally);
Previous, 20-year career as a realtime, freelance broadcast captioner - Read: responsible & calm under pressure.
Riding experience:
Childhood lessons in western on quiet horses - long ago! Two years private English riding lessons twice weekly with an eventing trainer - novice rider. Sporadic trail hacks with friends.
I want to continue taking riding lessons as a separate endeavor; ie, not expecting that as a perk.
