Duties of Current Occupation

Blue Mountain Station NZ - assisted with mustering sheep and cattle, rugging the trekking hacks and brood mares and feeding out.

Equine Work Experience
  • High country hill riding to muster cows. Also on multi-day treks, part of my job was to assist with grooming the horses at the end of the day, turning them out and cleaning tack. This gave me a real appreciation for the value of grooming in assessing condition and catching sores/injuries before they get worse.
  • Putting mileage on a young station bred X Clydesdale gelding for ~1year. He is a large puppy that needs a firm hand. He has taught me a lot in the time I have been working with him, I have developed a real enjoyment in groundwork especially, using it to improve communication between the two of us and work on building trust. We recently went to his first show and he was a gem, we even took home some ribbons.
  • Assisting with exercise of local horses (Western and English saddles). A couple of my friends have allowed me to ride their horses before I took on my own, a great opportunity to stay alert in the saddle and work with some different personalities.

Type of Ride Work
  • Flatwork (walk, trot, canter)
  • Hacking out across a range of environments; beach, forest, swamp, high country...
  • A small amount of jumping on other people's horses. Only once competitively at a small local competition and loved it.
  • I took a polo lesson recently and hope to go again soon; where I live currently is very far away from the polo scene in NZ!
