Equine Work Experience
I have been riding and working around horses since I was 11. I first started by doing work-for-lesson/trail ride exchanges, then moved on to paid jobs (including both restaurant industry and stable hand jobs) to pay for lessons. In the summers I would volunteer at my barn as a camp guide for kids' (ages 6-14) day camps. We would show kids how to catch, lead, groom and tack up their horse. In summer 2019, I volunteered on Rocking D ranch both mucking out and exercising horses. During the summer of 2020, I worked as a trail guide for Kelowna Stables at Myra Canyon Ranch. I was in charge of preparing horses and leading groups of up to 5 guests alone (and up to 12 with another guide) into the provincial park. I also worked with a newly acquired thoroughbred to render him trail and client ready.
In terms of my riding skills, I rode mainly English during my years of lessons, and Western as a trail guide and exercising horses.
Type of Ride Work
I learned to ride on retired Arabian endurance horses, saddled and bareback. I've worked with many kinds of horses through my trail guide job, including a Belgian, a Thoroughbred, Appaloosas, Shetlands, Quarter Horses, etc., spending 4h+ in the saddle/day. Also rode a working cattle horse. I can do simple changes of leads and was working on my flying changes when I stopped lessons. I have jumped up to 3ft. I have worked on turns on the haunches/forehand, half pirouettes, and collection.
