Equine Work Experience
I have worked intermittently as a stable hand in a riding school and livery yard for the past eight years while attending secondary school and university. In this role I gained valuable skills in animal care and management. My responsibilities included ensuring that the stables were cleaned and maintained to a high standard, ensuring all animals had access to water, and ensuring that the horses were given the correct amount of hay/haylage depending on their dietary requirements. Other responsibilities included carrying out the morning feed, and dosing oral medication when required. My role also included preparing horses before and after riding lessons, and assisting the owner of the yard during lessons. I was also responsible for moving horses to and from fields, and rugging when necessary.
Specialities
I always ensure that I maintain a tidy yard and it is kept to a high standard. I muck out quickly while also paying attention to detail. I am efficient at grooming and safely tacking up horses for riding lessons and casual riding.
Type of Ride Work
I have c. 15 years of riding experience. I did minimal riding as part of my role as a stable hand, but was sometimes tasked with initially sitting on new horses coming into the riding school or those coming back into work after time off. I have experience riding green horses. I have experience in jumping (non competitively), in flatwork, and in road/trail hacking.
