We are looking for a working student to join our team that believes that both horses and people like to be in control of their environment. Most of the horses being used in our program have been born here as have their mothers and grandmothers. Most have sires that have produced performance horses that have won over a millions dollars.
In addition to raising and training performance horses, we are also involved in an equine jobs for youth program. This program was developed to help youths primarily in the 18 to 23 year old age range find employment. The program includes both young adults with learning disabilities and young adults without learning disabilities. Because of the strategies used to train our horses, all of the horses can be used in this program. The working student's main focus would be on learning how to train horses of all age levels in such a way that (1) they can be shown in performance horse competition, and (2) they can be used in our equine jobs for youth program. There are no outside horses on the property and there is a full time barn manager in charge of cleaning the stalls. The position includes housing, and a modest stipend based on experience.
Requirements
The trainer must be open to using methods centered around ABA principles. There are many ways to teach the skills needed by people learning a new occupation. In our program ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) principles are being utilized for both researching and implementing training procedures needed by the personnel who work with horses. Likewise, though there are many approaches to training horses, in this program the major teaching strategy is based on using operant conditioning to build a bridging stimulus in order to train both horses and humans. Personnel involved in this program will be taught how to use these strategies to shape behavior in both horses and clients.
