Part-time groom -Small family yard, to provide day-to-day care and grooming of our 4 ponies and 2 horses whilst maintaining a clean and tidy yard, and paddocks. Duties to include mucking out, grooming, clipping, plaiting, attending shows, riding (14.2, 15h and 16), lunging, management, and ordering of supplies and general care of the ponies. Opportunity to learn the intricacies of how a non-profit Ex-Racehorse Aftercare operates -- could be "just a job", it could be a working student position, or a pathway for taking over when current Program Director retires. This is a part time position which includes a decent, furnished one-bedroom barn apartment with internet and utilities and a small salary. The first month or two will be full time to acclimate and learn our routine and horses. Good for someone who can get a part-time side gig or has a current small income. We are quite rural but not far from towns, 2 hours to the beach and mountains. We need someone ASAP, but can wait a few weeks for the right person. We have a very nice 22 stall barn with all amenities, outdoor and indoor arenas with jumps, 13 separate paddocks and pastures, and 10,000 acres of trails right out our back gate. We are accredited by the TAA and GFAS.
The ideal candidate is mature, has credible experience caring for horses, is 100% reliable, very observant, patient and kind to the horses, has a positive attitude, solid work ethic, can follow instructions, is detail oriented, willing to learn. If you can ride, that is a huge plus and you will be paid accordingly, with opportunity to show, fox hunt and lessons from a USEF judge.
Your horse, dog, cat considered.
Duties include feeding, turn out, stall cleaning, grooming/bathing, first aid, tack cleaning, and general stable maintenance. During nice weather, stall cleaning is minimal; hot or cold/wet weather, horses come in, so more stall cleaning then. Currently we have 19 horses-10 retired, 9 in rehab/retraining.
If you are interested in learning how a program like this works, and want to participate in all that entails, there is also grant writing, and fundraising. We are implementing an equine assisted therapy program in the coming months.
