The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is dedicated to providing exceptional care and second chances to our equine residents. We’re looking for a skilled Barn Manager to ensure every horse in our care receives the best possible life.
Position Overview: You’ll oversee the daily care of approximately 40 horses while leading a team of barn staff. Hours are generally 8am - 4pm - weekend day required. This is not a live-in position.
Responsibilities:
Oversee veterinary care.
Schedule intake exams and address acute health issues promptly.
Implement veterinary treatment plans, ensuring medications are given per instructions
Implement veterinary feeding programs: grain, supplement, hay.
Shavings procurement and storage.
Plan turnout schedules and rotations with an eye toward safety for the herd.
Lead barn staff, providing guidance, training, and support.
Create barn staff schedules to ensure consistent coverage and smooth operations.
Maintain a safe and organized barn environment, including secure medication storage and inventory management.
Support adoption preparation through training and readiness assessments.
Qualifications:
3-5 years experience managing barn operations and equine care.
Strong knowledge of horse health, nutrition, and training practices.
Capable of handling horses that exhibit potentially dangerous behaviors.
Proficient driving trucks and horse trailers.
2+ years experience supervising and mentoring staff.
Post-secondary education in an equine field desired.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Comfortable working in all weather conditions.

The mission of the MSSPA is to protect the health and welfare of abused and neglected equines. At MSSPA, we are dedicated to providing exceptional care and second chances to our equine residents on its 124 acre farm in Windham, Maine. The herd generally runs +/- 40 horses, donkeys, mules. MSSPA runs a successful adoption program placing 25 - 30 horses in adoptive homes each year. Horse not adopted live out the balance of their natural life on the farm.
