Position Overview: Evening Shift employees wanted at New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program– the largest and oldest ex-racehorse adoption program in the country. This position is seasonal and extends from June - September, with opportunity for more hours, as available, if desired beyond the warmer months. The position would be 2-3 hours per day (typically between 6 - 8pm) and involves turning out horses in their respective turnouts (approximately 25 horses), checking hay and water for any horses in stalls, and surveying the horses in 24/7 turnouts.
Duties and Responsibilities: Daily Evening chores:
- Turn out horses marked as needing evening/ overnight
- Check hay and water for horses in stalls & refill as necessary
- Check on horses in 24/7 turnouts
- Address and communicate any concerns with barn management
- Close up property for night
Candidate Qualifications:
- Must be able to lift 50lbs without issue and climb ladder into hay lofts
- Exceptional reliability and responsibility with
- Strong equine background, with the ability to adjust to the needs and learning style of many different horses (young/ green horse/ OTTB experience preferred)
- Excellent horse handling skills
- Knowledge of horse care, with basic equine first aid and bandaging experience preferred
- Attention to detail and the initiative to actively address situations

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program was founded in 1992 to offer retiring racehorses a safe-haven, rehabilitation, and continued education through placement in experienced, caring homes. Most of the horses arriving at New Vocations are injured and thin, suffering the normal occupational hazards of racing. Without a useful skill to offer their previous option was often a one-way ticket to the local livestock auction.
New Vocations provides a safety net for these horses matching them with qualified individuals and following up on their rehabilitation and vocational training to ensure a successful transition. Our focus is on adoption versus retirement, believing that each horse deserves to have an individual home and purpose.
Our Lexington Facility houses 30 horses on the training side, and another 30 or so in rehab/ layup. We aim to lay a solid foundation for the horses' future careers and to match them with an adopter who will ultimately help them thrive in a new vocation!
