We are looking for a farrier to join our team at a busy Vet practice on Vancouver Island. We provide supportive care for performance horses across multiple disciplines. The Farrier in this position will be performing both routine and specialty shoeing. We are looking for someone who is passionate about horse care and providing exceptional customer service to our clients both two and four legged.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Work with the team to manage the shoeing/hoofcare of more than 200 horses
- Keep vehicle stocked with suitable tools and materials according to schedule
- Arrive in a timely manner to scheduled appointments and be willing to communicate readily when facing unavoidable delays
- Liaise with vets to review radiographs and come up with a plan for corrections if needed
- Communication with horse owners to formulate a plan for shoeing based on the horses’ conformation, level of fitness and footing that it works on
- Trim and shoe horses using various shoe package options to support comfort and soundness in regular work and through rehab programs designed by vets
- Attend to emergency calls to identify hoof issues (ex. abscesses and bruises) or replace lost shoes
- Make recommendations about how long horses should wait between farrier visits based on experience and information collected at appointments.
- Create therapeutic shoe packages where necessary to support recovery from injury/defects

Requirements
Employment Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of work experience as a Farrier
- Certified Journeyman Farrier of Canada, AFA, DipWCF or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years of experience with Therapeutic Shoeing with extensive knowledge of using pads
- Exceptional horse handling skills and experience working with horses of all ages
- Good observational skills to spot disease or injury
- Physically fit, including the ability to stand and crouch for many hours
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively and communicate well with others
- Ability to serve clients across the Saanich peninsula and other parts of Vancouver Island, including the possession of a driver’s license valid in British Columbia
- Scheduling flexibility, including the ability to work as scheduled
- English language ability
Job Benefits
Terms of Employment:
- Hourly wage of $60 per hour
- Benefits include a performance bonus, travel expenses, vacation and the opportunity to participate in continuing education and conferences. A vehicle will be provided.
