Located in rural area. Small stable with a maximum of 10 horses. Dutch owner/manager. Dressage based environment. Lesson horses and boarders. Newer facility with indoor and outdoor arena. Box stalls, paddocks and pastures. Heated tack-room and 2 heated tack-stalls. Private trails.
I have been working here at Dutch Friendship Stables for over 6 months, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Yes, it is located in a very rural area, and no, there aren't any designated days off, but the patience that Rosalyne has with her working students is frankly astounding, and I am so glad I made the choice to be here!
Rosalyne will train you from the ground up. You need to love love animals, have common sense, you need to have a solid work ethic, you need to know how to work on your own, and you need to be humble and willing enough to learn! If you've got all these traits and you want to learn more about how to take the best possible care of horses, apply.
As a working student at DFS you will be welcomed into the family, and fed well. :) Rosalyne has been so understanding of my diet restrictions and I am so grateful for it, because I was expecting to have a hard time with that as a WS. She and her husband are engaging, friendly, and some of the hardest working people I have ever met. They are very easy to talk to, and love to have a laugh.
The horses are treated like KINGS and you will learn how to pay attention to the details of a horse's communication, health, and happiness. These aren't dead broke horses, but they aren't wild mustangs either. They have personality and they choose to work because they trust, not because they fear.
There aren't any scheduled days off because livestock don't take days off - they need care every day. But, Rosalyne works alongside you 7 days a week. You're a team! Also, she is very open to negotiating chunks of time off. For example, taking shifts of chore work so that one of us (...usually me :) can sleep in.
Seriously, there are very few opportunities like the one offered here. SHE WILL TRAIN YOU. If you are thinking about doing it, just apply.
I worked for this wonderful woman back in 2012-13. Literally couldn't say a bad thing about them! A wonderful family to be with, beautiful home, and an outstanding facility! The horses are just amazing, every one of them has a great personality, and ride at different levels. Coming from just about every discipline. It dressage, i came into this barn thinking I'd be a little bored of it, but i never did! It was literally the best year of my life! Rosalyne takes such amazing care of her animals, they look like they came out of a magazine! One of the BEST trainers I've ever had, as she knew how to make it so you understand what you're doing wrong and how to fix it to take you to the next level. Days can be long, but definitely not the kind of job that burns you down, like most. I literally can't say enough good things. But for the bad things... the only bad thing is that there's so many amazing horses that you can't choose which one is your favorite! If i could, I'd go back in a heartbeat!
Dutch Friendship Stables is an amazing place to work. Rosalyne is a great boss and teacher! I learned so much in the short time I was with them. The atmosphere is positive and happy and the horses are amazing! Working at DFS was an amazing opportunity and I am so glad I was able to work with and for Rosalyne and Jerry at DFS! I hope to return soon to visit them and the horses!
Very friendly, welcoming owners. Small, full-service stable. Very good place to get show experience, especially in dressage, as well as the opportunity to have sole charge of the barn at times. I stayed for nearly a year and enjoyed my time there and learned a lot.
