Libby is a 17 year old appendix quarter horse mare. Completely sound, never had any lameness issues. She is an excellent trail horse, will go out alone or with other horses. She needs to be worked at least twice a week to behave in top form. If ridden less, I have found its best to lunge her for at least 20 minutes prior to riding. She has never had a bit in her mouth, but I'm sure she would do fine with a light hand. I have only ridden her in a halter, and she does just fine with that. She is all voice controlled, I need only tell her to walk, trot, or canter, very little leg pressure is needed to move this mare out. She has an excellent work ethic. Libby has a very nice trot, and a smooth rocking horse canter. This is a horse that can move fast if desired, the people I rode with when I lived in Montana were endurance riders, so we did a lot of running. My Mother rides her occasionally, and is a very timid rider. She does well on Libby when she's worked consistently. If worked daily, I would say Libby would do well for an advanced beginner. If only ridden once a week or less, she would be suited to an intermediate rider or better, as she gets a little hot when not worked enough.
The only draw back to this mare is her Uvitus, it does flare up during the summer months, but with proper care; a fly mask, and msm or asprin everyday it can be controlled. At the moment she is a little difficult to catch because of losing some of her sight in a flare up this summer. There is not a mean bone in this mare's body. Once she is haltered, she does not make any further attempts to escape, perhaps she would do well if she could be turned out with a halter on all the time? If worked with a few times a week she becomes much more personable. The way to this girl's heart is through treats and grooming! She is a very sweet girl once she gets to know you.
