  • Horse Person Wanted

Private Ranch near Mt. Shasta with 22 horses. Owners have high standards for care, training, safety and teamwork. Riding focus is primarily Western and is geared to training reliable trail horses. Duties: Daily horse care, riding and training. Additional skill sets that would be an asset: Horse health and veterinary knowledge. Natural Horsemanship. English and/or driving experience.

Training Assistant is involved in primary care of the horses part of the day and the remaining time is spent working with the Trainer. Duties are shared with other employees and include, but are not limited to, feeding, haying, turnout, holding horses for the farrier/vet/chiropractor, administration of meds/dewormers/equine first aid, grooming/tacking/cooling out horses, assisting Trainer with groundwork, etc. Other duties: occasional local horse transport, foaling assistance, halter training, handling foals and youngsters, and close monitoring of all horses. Most of our horses live outside so there is limited stall cleaning. This position may include showing horses contingent upon the situation and your relevant skill level. Sometimes we will need you to hold down the fort while we are gone. Good opportunity to learn more about breeding/foaling, starting horses, dressage. Background in dressage is preferred but not necessary. Assist in groundwork/riding/conditioning as appropriate. Our horses range on average 15.1- 16.1hh. Some have very short backs and need riders who take a smaller saddle seat. We need an appropriately sized rider that can fit the smaller, less mature horses (appx. max of 5'7", 150lbs). We focus on dressage and are looking for someone who will be satisfied with a job that does not involve jumping. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED: Please treat this like a job application and send a personalized email through Y&G outlining your relevant experience, what you are looking for in your next job, your earliest start date and some PHOTOS and/or video of yourself interacting with horses. We want to have the chance to read your profile so we are prepared for a more productive phone interview. For this reason, please do not call us without warning. After reviewing your email we will contact you to set up a telephone interview if it looks like you may have the skills/experience we are looking for. We thank you for your understanding with this request.

The Facility

Private farm engaged in breeding, foaling, showing and sales of Danish Warmbloods (Knabstruppers), Appaloosa Sport Horses and Trakehners primarily for dressage. We are located in Shelby County which is probably the most equestrian-populated community in the Birmingham area. We do not board or train outside horses or offer lessons to the public. We have 14 stalls and most horses here are on 24 hour turnout, however, we do stall for injured/sick horses, rotating stallions for paddock turnout and for foaling out mares. Usually we will have about 5-10 foals a year. Our youngsters are handled daily with the goal of raising horses that enjoy and respect human companionship. There is currently a 120' x 200' outdoor grass arena and a 75' roundpen for training activities. Youngstock and our stallions are shown in USEF, USDF competition. Don't believe the media portrayals of Alabamians being uneducated hillbillies and give us a chance. We are 30 miles from downtown Birmingham, AL.
